This book claims to help people improve their social skills. Assuming you do improve your social skills, the book provides advice on making friends and influencing people. There are a lot of helpful suggestions. Information is provided about the benefits of certain suggestions, and several checklists of activities you can do.For a book that proposes to help you move from social anxiety to a position of influence there are several key areas missing:1. A knowledge of who you are and what it means to live are important . . this knowledge is necessary if you really want to get to the root causes of your problems and make wise choices. Only limited information is found in this book. Topics like visualization and meditation are mentioned in several places. There is a brief mention of concerns regarding cultural differences and personal values. In Chapter 7 the author highlights the value of a “big, sincere, genuine, smile” . . . easy to say, not so easy to do.2. Yes transformation is possible, however following the checklists in this book may not be the best plan. For example the book highlights the importance of the ability to “manage anger” - there are some “tips” in Chapter 4 but the “tips” should be followed by reference to other resources that may be helpful. The book mentions the possibility of medication for social anxiety disorder, but should also highlight the many modalities available in the Alternate Medicine area that can be very helpful – example: Thought Field Therapy (also Emotional Freedom Technique).3. The idea of having goals is mentioned several times: “achieve your goals,” “start with small winnable goals,” etc. . . however, there is not much about basic planning skills needed to achieve your goals.Are you aware of the advice that can be found in the Bible? The following time honored advice is missing from Ms. Mendez’s book.But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Jesus (Matthew 6:33)“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,” — Jesus (Matthew 7:12)“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” — Paul (Romans 12:1-2)“But the fruit of the Spirit is live, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. —Paul (Galatians 5:22-23)From the first question in the Westminster Shorter catechism:Q.
